Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's success is great news for more remakes

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has crossed a major milestone just a week after it launched, having sold over 3 million copies in its first week on sale.

Ubisoft announced the milestone on its social media channels, saying: “Special thanks to all of you for playing and sharing tall tales about your Caribbean adventures.”

While Ubisoft is usually pretty quiet about its total sales of Assassin’s Creed games, the original Black Flag is thought to be one of the best selling games in the series at roughly over 15 million lifetime sales. That’s more than even Assassin’s Creed 2 or Brotherhood, which are considered to be two of the most popular games in the series.

If the remake of Black Flag continues on its current trajectory, it could well end up becoming the best selling game in the series outright, and a huge triumph for the team at Ubisoft. However, it might ring a little hollow for those at Ubisoft Barcelona who were laid off right after the successful game launched.

This huge sales milestone is also great news for the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, as the remake of this old classic in the Anvil engine is likely to inspire confidence in other remakes of the series’ past entries.

A remake of the original Assassin's Creed from 2007 has been rumoured to be in the works for a few years now, reimagining the adventure with Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad during the Third Crusade.

Earlier in the year, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson spoke on their podcast, saying: “There is another Assassin's Creed remake in the works – one of the earlier ones. And based on Black Flag, they'll revisit the series, and see what other remakes they can do."

With the 20th anniversary of Assassin’s Creed fast approaching at the end of 2027, this would be an ideal window to release a remake of the adventure that started it all.

We’ve even seen Ubisoft hint towards revamped mechanics of the original game in more recent Anvil Engine titles. Black Flag Resynced saw the return of social stealth, as did 2023’s Mirage.

Ubisoft hasn’t confirmed that any other AC game is set to get the full Resynced treatment just yet. All we do know is that Hexe is the next title in the series, with it thought to be set during the Holy Roman Witch Trials in 17th century Germany.

It’s also thought that Hexe is targeting a 2027 release date, but that could slip to later with no official date in the calendar just yet.
