Meet the best selling game of 2026 you've probably never heard of
An indie game on Steam has sold over 15 million copies, outstripping the likes of 007 First Light, Resident Evil Requiem and more.
2026 is set to be a banger year for video games with Resident Evil Requiem, 007 First Light and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced capturing the hearts of gamers as well as their wallets – and the big money maker of GTA 6 isn’t even here for another six months.
While those games are thought to have sold millions of copies already, it’s nothing compared to what’s likely the best selling video game of the year so far, and if you’ve not spent a lot of time online recently, you’ve probably not heard of it.
Meccha Chameleon launched exclusively on PC via Steam on June 10, 2026, and in the month since then, it’s sold over 15 million copies.
The concept is pretty simple, but marvelously executed. It’s a twist on the popular hide and seek game ‘Prop Hunt’ that proved popular in custom Call of Duty and Garry’s Mod lobbies back in the day, but developer lemorion_1224 has given it a fantastic twist.
Instead of taking on the form of random objects within the world, you play as a figure made of white clay and it’s your job to manually paint yourself into the surroundings to disguise yourself from the hunters.
“Spot, pose, and "artistic skill" are keys to survival,” the game’s description on Steam reads.
This cat and mouse gameplay is not only hilarious to engage with among mates, but it’s also delightfully funny to watch, too. Over on Twitch, the game peaked at 239,084 viewers towards the end of June.
On Steam, the reviews are ‘mostly positive’, with one gamer writing: “Incredibly unique and fun! It's basically an artists version of prop hunt, and it's extremely satisfying to pull off when you hide well in plain sight. If you like drawing and you like prop hunt or hide and seek, try the game out.”
Another adds: “What a fun game, devs have been relentless with the updates as well, have already improved so much. There isn’t a more worthy game at this price range at the minute at all! 100% recommend.”
Meanwhile, a third review reads: “Ultra fun. Couldn't ask more for this price. I'd even pay 10 EUR.”
On July 5, the developer announced the incredible sales milestone. “We hit 15 million in sales! Thanks a million!,” it reads.
Why is Meccha Chameleon so popular?
Meccha Chameleon is the latest game in a genre phenomenon that’s taken over gaming in the last few years known as ‘Friend Slop’. Games like Peak, R.E.P.O., Lethal Company and Content Warning all fall into this category, with relatively simple concepts, simple budgets, and often proximity voice chat that make them ideal for an evening of low-stakes, hilarious fun.
Of course, the success of these games is largely down to how fun and replayable the experiences are – but it also helps that they’re incredibly cheap. Meccha Chameleon is available for £5.29 on Steam right now, and that’s without any sort of sale.
That’s a low enough price for gamers to drop without too much worry that they’re going to regret their purchase. It’s also incredibly refreshing in a world where the big-budget titles go for as much as £70.
The success of Meccha Chameleon is a joy to watch, especially for a game built by just two people. It’s also a sign that some of the best gaming experiences these days are found in the smaller creative projects.
