If you're a fan of the Persona games, then the rather bizarrely named Metaphor ReFantazio is probably top of your 2024 wishlist. Launching on October 11 for PS4, PS5, Xbox and PC, the new game is directed by Katsura Hashino, whose previous credits include Persona 3, 4 and 5, as well as Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. If the first review is anything to go by, Metaphor ReFantazio shares a lot of similarities with the Persona series, not just in terms of gameplay, but also the overall quality. Indeed, Japanese publication Famitsu awarded the game 37 out of a possible 40 in its Metaphor ReFantazio review.

Critics praise the combat system, presentation and overall storytelling, comparing it favourably to the Persona games.

If you've played the free demo currently available on PlayStation and Xbox, then you should have a pretty good idea about what to expect.

While the opening section of the demo is somewhat linear, players are given more freedom towards the tail-end of the "Prologue".

This includes a similar time-management system to Persona, where players have a certain number of days to complete the main mission and side-quests.

While you can tackle the main mission right away, it's more beneficial to spend some time levelling up, finding new gear and winning the trust of townsfolk.

The risk, however, is that you run out of time to achieve your main goal, which may also take longer than expected.

The game also features an Archetype class system, which dictates the spells and fighting style of each character.

New "Archetypes" can be unlocked by forging bonds with different characters. Likewise, you can change equipped Archetypes to fit the current situation.

The demo, for example, features a side quest where you visit a dungeon to eliminate a monster. However, the monsters in the dungeon react unfavourably to magic wielding characters, making it more beneficial to select warrior-style Archetypes.

Atlus explains more: "From the creative minds behind Persona 3, 4, and 5 comes Metaphor: ReFantazio, a unique fantasy world, where your protagonist will journey alongside his fairy companion, Gallica, to lift the curse from the kingdom’s lost prince.

"Control your destiny, face your fears and awaken magical 'Archetype' powers that lie dormant in your heart.

"By awakening to an Archetype, you will unlock the power to channel and combine the abilities of unique job classes. Strengthen your bonds and build your party to take down powerful foes and discover the kingdom’s true nature."
