I lost that laughing feeling, says Jack
GLOOMY comic Jack Dee says the moody persona he portrays on stage is no act.
In fact the beleaguered funnyman reveals he hasn’t even cracked a smile for an incredible 36 years.
“I was 11. It’s an odd feeling. I stopped being able to be excited about things – it just stopped. And I’ve never been excited since,” he tells Shortlist.
“After that? All a bit of a disappointment.”
Jack, 47, reveals that the closest he has come to a bit of a buzz recently was on a shopping trip to the supermarket.
“On a bank holiday Monday I went to Waitrose thinking it would be closed. It was open. That gave me a curious version of a thrill. I remember thinking, ‘This is an added bonus,’” he says.
But it’s not all doom and gloom for the star, who has made a name as a younger Victor Meldrew.
Despite admitting he used to miss the feelings of his youth, he explains: “I’ve discovered I can recreate it for my children. I can’t be excited for myself so I can at least make them smile.”
