Ukip is still an important political asset to the UK
IN RECENT months there has been a lot of talk to the effect that now that the UK has voted to leave the EU, Ukip, its mission accomplished, is a spent force.
Douglas Carswell quit Ukip to become an independent candidate
The loss of Ukip’s only MP, Douglas Carswell, has reinforced that point of view. But in fact the opposite is true. Ukip is as potent a political presence as it ever has been.
It has changed the political landscape, releasing us from the shackles of the EU, and it is now needed as much as ever to make sure there is no turning back.
Take the news that if some people get their way, child benefits will continue to be sent to Poland even after our departure.
This appalling waste of money – and travesty of natural justice – is one of the many types of iniquity exposed by Ukip and one of the many reasons Britain voted to leave.
Nigel Farage has already savaged the plans and this is exactly the reason that Ukip will continue to play such an important part in our national life.
The party's political presence is as potent as it ever has been
Douglas Carswell praises Theresa May's Brexit plan
We need Ukip to ensure that, as the Prime Minister keeps telling us, Brexit really does mean Brexit.
We need them to keep an eagle eye on the proceedings and challenge what is really going on.
There will be many attempts at backsliding over the next few years and many attempts to undermine Britain’s departure.
Ukip is as necessary to the political landscape as it has ever been.

Not more council waste
How depressingly predictable: nine out of 10 councils will be hiking council tax, with only 22 councils freezing the levy and just one reducing it.
Most are citing the increased costs of social care as the population continues to age and its needs, more than ever, must be met.
To some extent this is all well and good: a society should be judged on how it treats its old and the UK has been falling down on that front for some time.
Nine out of 10 councils will be hiking council tax
But just let’s make sure the money gets where it is supposed to go.
Faced with increased revenues, the first thing that most councils do is waste it.
They should be threatened with very severe penalties should that turn out to be the case here.

HRH the Princess of Thrift
Opponents of royalty often cite the pomp and circumstance surrounding them as a reason they should go. They should take a look at Princess Anne.
Thrift incarnate as she looks for a vintage bargain at Gatcombe Park Horse trials, she is an example to everyone, monarchist and republican alike.
