More speed to cut the cost
OUR asylum system is costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of pounds a year, with much of it going on the cost of housing and feeding applicants.
Some say that asylum seekers should be allowed to work in order to support themselves.
But this would be disastrous – leading to huge numbers of economic migrants abusing the asylum system in order to enter the UK labour market.
So the only way to keep costs under control is to speed up the adjudication process.
There is no reason why somebody’s entitlement to refugee status cannot be assessed and ruled upon within weeks rather than months or even years.
Ministers must get the administration up to scratch, cut out the multiple layers of appeal and speed up deportations of those who do not make the grade.
Then they could save the taxpayer a packet.
