Bring them home at once
IT IS good to see David Cameron taking the trouble to visit our remaining troops in Afghanistan before Christmas.
But his claim that it is “mission accomplished” in that benighted country does not stand up to scrutiny.
Poppy cultivation is up, girls still cannot go to school in safety, the country’s government is riddled with corruption and faction-fighting and meanwhile the Taliban are waiting us out before seeking to resume control.
It will be very difficult to claim that any British serviceman or woman killed in afghanistan between now and next year’s withdrawal has made a worthwhile sacrifice.
This newspaper would have had our brave troops out years ago.
When they do withdraw it will certainly not be a day too soon.
