Back to the Middle Ages
REMEMBER when the weekly rubbish collection was a traditional part of British life?
It’s a ritual that seems to belong to a more civilised age. The fortnightly collection is now regarded as standard but now even that is under threat. For as we report today, several councils are looking at introducing a monthly collection. The prospect of rotting waste standing around in dustbins for four weeks seems practically medieval even as the rules regarding recycling become ever more strict and draconian.
The slightest breach can lead to threats and penalties.
As this newspaper has said many times: there are certain essential services that a council must provide, one of them is to take away the rubbish.
It is non-negotiable and it is an outrage that we no longer get the same level of service that we did half a century ago.
