Labour is clueless about the countryside - Keir Starmer would be a disaster for UK farmers

Labour's ignorance towards British farmers is shown in their recent manifesto, where they lack any plan for the rural economy, says Steve Barclay.

Backing British farming is a matter of principle for Conservatives.

We understand that food security is essential to national security, and that a sustainable and profitable agricultural sector is vital to keeping this country fed.

That is why this government has used our Brexit freedom to create farming support schemes tailored to the needs of UK farmers in place of the bureaucratic subsidy system overseen by Brussels.

Now we have a plan to build on that progress, with the promise of £1billion extra support for farms over the next parliament and a food security target enshrined in law.

We will also slash planning red tape to give farmers more freedom to develop their farms, an issue the hit TV show Clarkson’s Farm has highlighted.

Yet British farming now faces the very real threat of a Labour government with absolutely no plan for our rural economy.

Keir Starmer’s manifesto, unveiled earlier this week, contains just 87 words about farming in its entire 131 pages.

Labour are not promising a single penny extra in support for the sector, which the National Farmers Union has described as “deeply disappointing.”

Instead, they pledge to unleash a raft of eco-schemes, like those that have destroyed thousands of jobs under the Welsh Labour government, in an “accelerated” dash to net zero.

Labour does not understand or care about the countryside.

Starmer is the latest in a procession of Labour leaders from north London fixated by fashionable urban concerns who do not listen to rural communities.

A Labour government would be a disaster for farming, putting food security at risk for us all.
