Enough! It's time to fight the criminals, EXPRESS COMMENT
PC Andrew Harper's horrific murder this month was a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by British police officers every day to keep us safe.
PC Andrew Harper: Police pay tribute to murdered officer in 2019
In the wake of this terrible incident we applaud the British chief constables' emergency summit to discuss the safety of police and all of us on the streets. The reality is that it is not just the men and women in blue whose lives are at daily risk but many ordinary citizens as the knife-wielding criminal gangs have been allowed to take control of our streets. Dozens of lives, mainly young teenagers, have been lost this year to knife crime. Enough is enough.
We would urge the Government and all politicians to get behind this summit and give the forces their full backing.
Boris Johnson's decision to increase police numbers by 20,000 is very welcome as is the new tough approach to tackling crime ushered in by the Home Secretary Priti Patel.
It is time to take the fight to the criminals. Certainly, those who attack police officers should face the harshest of sentences. There can be no excuses.
It is time to restore respect for the law and those who ensure it is maintained.
Let's all get behind Boris
BORIS Johnson has again been Churchillian in his words ahead of the crucial G7 conference in Biarritz this weekend. He is absolutely right to say that Britain's best days are ahead of us and not behind us.
How refreshing it is to have a political leader who exudes positivity and confidence in this great country and its many strengths.
It is about time that the doom-mongers among the Remainers and their friends in the BBC give the Prime Minister some space to let him get on with doing the job.
His achievements this week in redefining the discussions around the Irish backstop and Withdrawal Agreement have been astounding.
Merkel and Macron have been charmed, polls show the British public supports the new Brexit strategy and whatever happens we are going to leave the EU on October 31.
This country is going to succeed with Brexit and we have a Prime Minister who is proud to say it.

Happy Bank Holiday
IT HAS been torrid weather for much of the summer so thank goodness this Bank Holiday weekend will see the sun shine on Britain.
We just hope that all our readers have a lovely break and enjoy the glorious weather, hopefully sampling the best of British.
Given the carnage at Headingley though, it may be too much to ask for a full day's cricket even if there are no rain clouds.
But we can but hope England find a way to fight back.
