In Britain failure no longer carries consequences, says Carole Malone
In Britain nothing works. Worse, we don't seem to care. We have become inured to failure - we are a land where cocking everything up no longer has consequences, writes Carole Malone.
Nothing works in this country any more - not the trains, not the planes, not the schools, not the immigration system, not the civil service. Nothing!!!
And the people responsible for all that don’t seem terribly bothered about it.
This week we have holidaymakers stranded all over the world because Britain’s outdated air traffic control system couldn’t cope with some “unreliable flight data” that came in from some French airline. Martin Rolfe, the boss of National Air Traffic Services is on £1.3m-a-year but reckons none of this is his fault - it’s the bloody French.
But from where I’m sitting the fact we have an out-of-date antiquated ATC system IS his fault isn’t it? Surely it’s his job to rectify or replace a system that can’t cope with any unfathomable data that comes in - especially when millions of people’s lives depend upon it?
We have thousands of children from 104 schools NOT going back next week because their school is likely to collapse around them thanks to antiquated concrete this Government – and others – have known has been dodgy for decades. Someone has to be responsible for that work not being done? So who?
Because what this means is that children just getting back to some kind of normality after the pandemic will have their education disrupted yet again because some idiots didn’t sanction the work on their “dangerous” schools.
And this doesn’t catastrophe doesn’t just affect the kids. It affects those frantic parents who as we speak will be scrabbling around trying to arrange childcare for next week because they have to go to work and their kids won’t be at school.
We have a health service run by obscenely paid hospital bosses who when experienced doctors tell them a nurse is killing babies – do nothing.
Well they do. They make the doctors apologise to the murdering nurse. And the attitude that prevailed at the Countess of Chester hospital where Lucy Letby killed seven babies is alive and well in hospitals all over the country.
We have a Civil Service which serves as an extreme wing of the Labour Party and exists for nothing more than to thwart Government policy it doesn’t like.

We have trains that don’t work. We have doctors - some of the best paid people in the country and that includes some of the Junior docs – striking and leaving vulnerable people in danger because they think they deserve 35 percent more in their pay packets.
What the Hell has happened to this country? There was a time Britain had a reputation for good service, for getting things done, for competency.
Well, forget all that. Post pandemic huge swathes of people have decided they don’t want to go back to work because they quite like spending time in the garden and watching daytime TV (I’ve just described a huge chunk of the Civil Service there).
We have people in power who earn shedloads of money to take responsibility when the dog doo hits the fan - but they don’t. And there are no consequences for them not doing that. They just keep taking the money.
The Air Traffic Control cock up will cost airlines £100m, yet Air Traffic Control boss Rolfe refuses to quit and it appears no-one can make him.
We have cities all across the country being charged the outrageous ULEZ tax when studies have shown it has a minimal effect on air quality. Yet London’s mayor Sadiq Khan, and others like him are allowed to get away with lying to the British people by claiming it does - and taxing them till they squeak.
And on top of all that we’re paying through the nose for fuel, for food. Our mortgages have rocketed thanks to the incompetence of the Bank of England boss, Andrew Bailey, who should have raised interest rates sooner than he did.
But hey – he too is still in his job and is being paid the princely sum of £495,000 a year for his incompetence. And that’s the nub of it isn’t it?
Incompetence and bad service have become the norm in Britain. It happens and there are no consequences. We’re all just supposed to shrug our shoulders and say “oh well….”
The only good news this week….. someone produced what looks like a very realistic photograph of Nessie, the Loch Ness monster.
If the sea dinosaur exists I hope he or she stays exactly where they are because life on land in Blighty just aint that good at the moment.
