SINGER Tom Petty has been taken off his life support machine after he was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, according to reports.

The 66-year-old frontman was found unconscious at his Malibu home and was immediately taken to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital on Sunday.
However, it was soon reported the American rocker's life support had been removed after tests confirmed he had no brain function, according to TMZ.
After the inital reports of Tom's condition was revealed, sources announced his death after the Los Angeles police confirmed the news.
But the LAPD later issued an apology for the premature claims and wrote on Twitter: “The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertently provided to some media sources.

Tom had just completed a lengthy tour, finishing in California on September 25.
The Rock and Roll star is best known for a string of hits with his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Some US media outlets are reporting that life support has now been switched off.
