The star, who plays Phil Mitchell in the BBC soap, has become the proud godfather of two baby gentoo penguin chicks.
The rare breed is in danger of of becoming extinct due to egg thieves, pollution and destroyed habitats.
The Birmingham Mail has said that Steve, 58, asked to be the chicks' godfather and will be able to name the adorable birds when they are sexed at 3 months old.

Steve will get the pleasure of naming the penguins
Chris Coventry, a spokesperson for Sea Life, said: "Steve has been wonderful in raising awareness of our awareness of our penguins and creatures sine his photos went viral earlier in the year, so it made perfect sense for us to name him as the Codfather to our two new rare baby gentoo penguins.
"Populations of gentoo have declined rapidly in recent years due to damage to their habits from tourism and pollution and the illegal collection of their eggs. Our chicks are the first to be born in England this year.
"Steve's duties will include helping us name our chicks when we discover their sex, and be supportive to our penguins while they learn to swim. Perhaps he can volunteer to get into the water in his armbands for encouragement," he added.
The penguins are on the verge of dying out
Back on EastEnders, Phil has recently been involved in some harrowing scenes with his ex-flame, Lisa Fowler (played by Lucy Benjamin).
The pair have clashed as they were recently reunited as they came together to look after their daughter Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper) when she was attacked at the school prom.
EastEnders continues tomorrow on BBC One at 7.30pm.
