The actress revealed that she was told her sibling had passed away after suffering from a brain haemorrhage at the age of 23.
Her dad Godfrey chose to keep the circumstances of her death a secret as he feared she and her mother would be unable to cope with the news.
Sarah committed suicide after giving birth to her first son in Buenos Aires with her Argentinian husband, in 1967.
It was only three years later that Charlotte's brother-in-law told her that Sarah had shot herself.

Now, the 71-year-old has told Stellar that she felt "pleased" when she finally learned the truth about her sister's suicide.
"I'll never know whether it was right or wrong," she said. "We were all lost in our islands of grief.
"When I found out the truth, I felt quite pleased in a way - I could be with [my dad], we could help each other."
The Broadchurch star has noted that her death was one of the factors that led to her depression but she was not diagnosed until 1984.

She told the publication: "I couldn't cope with having to cope. That's what depression is. You lose it. Literally. Everything stops."
While Charlotte struggled to cope with the loss of her sister, her mother was left overcome with grief and eventually suffered a stroke.
The star recalled: "She was so traumatised and shocked, she lost control of her body. That was a manifestation of grief."
