The celebrated Indian actor is believed to have suffered a heart attack at his home in Mumbai in the early hours.
According to reports, the film star later passed away and his death was confirmed to the BBC by a member of his family.
Puri made a name for himself starring in a number of landmark Indian films back in the 1980s, including Ardh Satya, Paar and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.
He went on to land memorable roles in several British movies, such as 1999's East Is East, in which he played George Khan.

The Prime Minister condoles the passing away of actor Om Puri and recalls his long career.
As well as a cameo role in Richard Attenborough's acclaimed 1982 movie Gandhi, Puri starred alongside film heavyweights such as Dame Helen Mirren, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson and Julia Roberts.
His credits include 2014's The Hundred-Foot Journey, 1994's Wolf, Charlie Wilson's War a decade ago and The Ghost and the Darkness with Val Kilmer.
Puri's work in the British film industry saw him awarded an OBE in 2004.
The star's passing comes just two weeks after he tweeted his pride at his career accomplishments.

"I have no regrets at all. I have done quite well for myself. I didn’t have a conventional face, but I have done well and I am proud of it.
"I have been in the film industry for 35 years and everyone, including the spot-boys, will vouch for my character," Puri posted.
Following his death, numerous stars from the Bollywood film industry, such as Kamal Haasan, Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher, came forward to pay tribute on social media.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted: "The Prime Minister condoles the passing away of actor Om Puri & recalls his long career in theatre & films."
