The mother-of-one explained that she was contemplating suicide when she left the ITV soap opera in 2012 and had stopped taking her medication for ADHD and bipolar disorder.
"One day I was driving into the ITV studios and I thought, 'Wouldn't it be great if I just crashed my car now and it was all over?'," she admitted.
"I've suffered from depression. It was the main reason I had to leave Coronation Street.
"I was down and it was very intense – I don't think I was very well."

She said she became more positive after having daughter Matilda with partner Scott
Helen explained that she has become more positive since giving birth to her daughter Matilda and now has a "reason" to live.
"Matilda inspires me to be the best person I can be," she told The Sun. "I feel like I've massively matured now I've got Matilda.
"It's definitely changed me for the better and made me happy, because I feel that it's given me a reason. Everything gets put into perspective."
Earlier this week the soap star revealed she would be returning to Coronation Street as Rosie Webster.

The actress is set to return to Coronation Street early next year
She shared the news in a statement, which read: "I'm so excited to returning to Coronation Street and being part of the Webster family."
Meanwhile producer Kate Oates commented: "The Websters have missed Rosie and so have we. With Sophie away on holiday with her sister it seemed like the ideal time to bring Rosie back home with her for a visit.
“We are delighted that Helen is as keen to explore what Rosie has been up to away from the cobbles as we are.”
Coronation Street continues tonight on ITV at 7.30pm.
