A bloomin' giant treat for Mary
MARY Berry added the final rose to a giant cake made of flowers as she opened this year's RHS Wisley Flower Show.
The Great British Bake Off star, 79, completed the three-foot-six-inch cake by floral decorator Simon Lycett earlier today.
Mr Lycett, who has provided flowers to the Royals, used pale pink dianthus to form the three bases.
The 'icing' was created from hydrangeas, dahlias, roses and ivy.
I have no desire to be a centenarian. I think 90 is a great time. You've had a good innings
The top tier is finished with a silver urn filled with flowers in soft late summer shades.
Berry, who is also an RHS ambassador for Grow Your Own, added the final bloom to the cake as she opened the show at 9am this morning before a meet-and-greet and book signing with fans.
The organisers of the six-day-event, which also features the National Dahlia Society Annual Show, described it as a "floral extravaganza".
Some 40,000 visitors are expected to enjoy the range of stands, garden traders and nurseries exhibits as well as talks from horticultural experts.
Berry appeared at the show after suggesting she would like to see a change in the law regarding euthanasia.
Speaking to Radio Times magazine she told how she does not want to live beyond 90 and would like her children to be able to "give me a pill" if her health deteriorated and she became a "burden".
She said: "I have no desire to be a centenarian. I think 90 is a great time. You've had a good innings".
