Coronation Street scoops Best British TV Soap Award at Freesat Awards
CORONATION Street has picked up yet another accolade after winning the title of Best British TV Soap at Tuesday night's Freesat Awards.
The long-running soap beat the likes of EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks at the ceremony, which was hosted by Freesat in London, giving them yet another trophy to add to their collection from this year.
The popular programme - which was just embroiled in a whodunnit storyline following the death of Tina McIntyre - also won the TV Soap of the Year gong at the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards, as well as picking up Best Serial Drama at the National Television Awards.
It was also crowned Best British Soap at the BAFTA TV Awards, and took home nine prizes at the British Soap Awards last month.
Taking to the stage to collect the award was Brook Vincent, who plays Sophie Webster, alongside her on-screen lover Amy Kelly.
The pair looked stunning as they collected the award, with Brooke in a pair of white shorts and a matching blazer and Amy in a vintage-inspired polkadot frock and voluminous locks.
Big winners on the night included Ant and Dec, who scooped the Best Live TV Programme or Series awards, as well as Personality of the Year.
Doctor Who won the biggest award of the night, the Best of British: TV Programme or Series gong, for Doctor Who, The Day of the Doctor, with the judges praising the 50th anniversary special “momentous”.
Line of Duty meanwhile picked up Freesat Best TV Drama, and The Travel Channel won Best Specialist Channel.
Emma Scott, Freesat’s Managing Director, commented: “I never fail to be impressed with the outstanding quality of great free television and radio on Freesat. This year in particular has been a truly amazing one for TV drama, so we’re particularly proud to see Doctor Who, The Day of the Doctor and Line of Duty recognised as our winners from a fantastically strong field. “
“The Freesat awards celebrate the very best of Britain’s free TV, from Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway to Educating Yorkshire to The Wrong Mans. Huge congratulations to all our winners – they represent a roll-call of excellence, and that reflects the strong line-up of channels on Freesat which keep going from strength to strength.”
Hosted by comedian Marcus Brigstocke, the awards ceremony was attended by a 250 strong VIP audience of celebrities, media and broadcasters.
