Eurovision 2014: Molly Smitten-Downes wins over Brits on Twitter, despite only coming 17th
SHE might not have won last night's Eurovision Song Contest, but Molly Smitton-Downes certainly won over the nation last night with her heartfelt performance of Children of The Universe.
Fans of the upcoming artist took to Twitter in their droves to air their congratulations, despite the fact the 27-year-old only managed to reach 17th place.
"Well done Molly. We are all proud of you," wrote one fan
While another added: "Downloaded the song straight away. It's fair to say you've done the UK proud! stunning voice. Be proud of yourself."
"Well done Molly! #TeamMolly she did very well. So deserving for top 3.. If not a win!! X," said another viewer.
Meanwhile, some fans - including celebrities - thought that something sinister went on when it came to the voting.
"Molly deserves to do better than this," wrote a discouraged Les Dennis.
While comedian John Bishop added: "Let's have a referendum about staying involved with these cheating sods!!!"
Previously little-known Molly performed her self-penned song dressed in a gold, feather-trimmed dress and received 40 points from voters in 26 countries.
Ahead of her performance, Molly thanked fans on Facebook, writing: 'Just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you. I am amazed everyday by your kindness, support and encouragement. I am so so grateful to be heading onto that stage singing a song I believe in so much.
"I'm gonna sing it like I mean it, because I do, every word. I hope you feel it wherever you are! Now enjoy the party! HERE WE GO!!"
But it was Austria's bearded lady Conchita Wurst who eventually took home the trophy, with a mighty 290 points - including 12 from the UK.
Belting out her power ballad Rise Like a Phoenix, the star beat firm favourite Sweden to the top spot after giving one of the most glamorous and memorable performances of the contest.
"This is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom," a tearful Conchita said as she accepted the trophy.
"We are unity and we are unstoppable."
