300: Rise of an Empire slays competition at box office
Action sequel 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE crushed THE LEGO MOVIE to land the top spot at the box office.
The bloody fictionalised re-telling of the clash between Greek and Persian armies at the Battle of Salamis, starring Eva Green and Lena Headey, scooped £2.8 million during its opening weekend, crushing the previous top grossing film The Lego Movie which took £1.6 million.
Another new entry, Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel, claimed the number three spot with £1.53 millon in takings while last week's number two, Liam Neeson's mid-air thriller Non-Stop, fell two places to fourth taking £1.5 million.
Ice Cube's buddy cop comedy Ride Along also fell two places, falling from third to fifth to round out this week's top five with takings of £823,312.
