Nicole Kidman’s darkest hour was after split with Tom Cruise
SHE was blindsided when her husband of 10 years Tom Cruise filed for divorce back in 2001 and now Nicole Kidman has revealed that she “struggled” through a period of “emptiness” following the split.
The 46-year-old star, who was on a career high after bagging herself a Best Actress Oscar for her role in The Hours, said that behind the scenes she was an emotional wreck.
“I was having professional success and my personal life was struggling,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “[Divorce] can show you the emptiness of your own life.”
The Moulin Rouge star was “shocked and devastated” when Tom, 50, with whom she had two adopted children, Conor and Isabella, filed his divorce petition on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. Her court papers told how she had urged the Mission: Impossible actor to undergo marriage counselling but he refused and said his decision was final.
But while Nicole went through a dark time, these days she’s enjoying life with country music star husband Keith Urban, whom she married in 2006, and their two young daughters.
Tom meanwhile has since experienced the kind of heartbreak Nicole faced when his third wife Katie Holmes, the mother of his six-year-old daughter Suri, filed for divorce last June – five days before his 50th birthday.
“I didn’t expect it,” he confessed. “To be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have a grip on everything and then it hits you – this is it, what life can do to you.”
