Top Gun sequel: Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer set to see Maverick fly again
AFTER much speculation, film producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that a Top Gun sequel is on the cards with Tom Cruise set to reprise one of his most famous roles as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
Jerry, speaking at the Produced By Conference, admitted that he’s not short of willing participants and it seems Tom – now the highest paid Hollywood actor – is right at the front of the queue.
“For 30 years we’ve been trying to make a sequel and we’re not going to stop,” Jerry, 67, told the audience.
“We still want to do it with Tom and Paramount are still interested in making it. What Tom tells me is that no matter where he goes in the world people refer to him as Maverick.
For 30 years we’ve been trying to make a sequel and we’re not going to stop.
It’s something he is excited about so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we’ll get it made.”
It was in April last year that Paramount studio boss Adam Goodman revealed in an interview that “all parties are moving ahead”. However Tony Scott, who was to direct the film, died in August 2012.
Top Gun was the most successful fi lm of 1986, also starring Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis when Tom was only 24.
But now at 50, Tom’s Maverick may now find himself behind a desk instead of in a cockpit.
