Oscars 2025 earthquake horror as Hollywood hit by 'violent shaking' during afterparties
Oscars camera crews reporting live from A-list parties were seen holding onto their equipment as projected signs and backdrops trembled.
Los Angeles was rocked by a 3.9-magnitude earthquake, causing a stir at the Oscars afterparties as the red carpet backdrop shook violently. Live camera crews at star-studded events hosted by Vanity Fair and Elton John were seen clutching their gear while signs and backdrops swayed during the quake, which struck around 10 miles northwest of downtown L.A. at about 10.13pm local time on Sunday (6.13am GMT).
The Los Angeles Fire Department took to social media to confirm the tremor was felt in the city centre, stating: "At this time, LAFD is not entering earthquake mode."
Locals have been advised to stay alert and await further updates, with concerns over potential aftershocks looming. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake had a depth of 15.3 kilometres (9.5 miles), and as of yet, there have been no reports of damage or casualties, reports the Mirror.
California, known for its seismic activity, records hundreds of earthquakes each year, though most are relatively minor. The California Earthquake Authority notes that the state has more than 500 active faults, placing most Californians within 30 miles of one.
The 1994 Northridge earthquake remains one of Los Angeles' most devastating recent quakes, claiming 57 lives and inflicting damages worth an estimated $30 billion (£23 billion).
Meanwhile, the romantic drama Anora was the star of last night's Academy Awards, bagging the best picture award. Mikey Madison won best actress and Sean Baker was named best director.

Adrien Brody also clinched the Best Actor award for his role in The Brutalist, and sparked backlash with his lengthy acceptance speech as he refused to stop talking despite the music playing over him.
He told producers: "Please kill the music," adding he "wasn't going to stop talking" and it "wasn't his first rodeo". Brody also shocked viewers at home as he appeared to throw his chewing gum at his girlfriend Georgia Chapman as he headed to the stage to accept his award.
