Emma Willis shares two-word reason she and Matt needed help from 'third party' in marriage
Emma Willis shared the revelation on Jaimie Laing and Sophie Habboo's NewlyWeds podcast earlier this year
TV presenter Emma Willis has shared the reason why she and her husband Matt Willis needed help from a third party in their marriage.
Emma and Matt were making an appearance on Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo’s NewlyWeds podcast when they started discussing couples therapy.
In a candid admission in relation to couple’s therapy, Emma explained they made the decision to go because there were a couple of "sticking points" in their marriage.
She said: "We’ve done it [couples therapy] too…That was a big switch for us actually and we didn’t go because we were in trouble and we didn’t go because we were like ‘S*** this is a sinking ship’.
“We were like s***, there’s a couple of sticking points here that we can’t understand each other’s viewpoints on; so let’s get a third party to try and figure out why we can’t see where each other is coming from on it.”
Emma, 48, added: “You sit down and you’re just like ‘F***, this is brilliant’ and actually it's not that it's one or the other it’s just your brains are in a certain way because of your life.
“It’s just like I need to like switch my viewpoint slightly or open how much I can see or think from another person’s perspective and that is so simple but in those moments you sometimes just don’t think about it, do you?
“And it takes a stranger to go ‘Hey, what the f*** are you doing? You two are great!’”
Matt, 41, concurred that going to couples therapy was the “best thing” they ever did. Emma and Matt have been married since 2008 and in 2024 celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary.

Their appearance on the NewlyWeds podcast wasn’t the first time the pair have openly discussed their relationship and their trials and tribulations since they first met in 2004.
Earlier this year, Matt said of their marriage: “Most marriages go through rocky patches and ups and downs and luckily we've come out the other side of those and it's just made us stronger.”
Emma added: “We quite like each other still as well, which helps. We still laugh at each other, and we still get annoyed with each other... he's alright!”
