Karl Lagerfeld was as well-known for his fashion designing prowess, as he was for his sharp tongue. The German fashion legend refused to hold back while discussing others in the public eye - with stars from Princess Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton, to Meryl Streep - falling foul of his critical remarks.

Lagerfeld even took aim at famous figures he said he admired, like former First Lady Michelle Obama and Adele, pointing out issues he had with American author’s choice of hairstyle, and the British singer’s weight.

Over five years on from the news of Lagerfeld’s death, Disney+ has released six-part series, Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, which chronicles the rise of Karl Lagerfeld through the world of 1970s Parisian high fashion.

Daniel Brühl is taking on the role of Lagerfeld alongside Théodore Pellerin as the designer’s companion, Jacques de Bascher. Arnaud Valois is portraying Yves Saint Laurent, while Alex Lutz is starring as Pierre Bergé.

As fans reflect upon Lagerfeld’s fascinating, and at times controversial, legacy, Express.co.uk is taking a look back at some of his most jaw-dropping celebrity swipes over the years.

Becoming Karl Lagerfeld is available to watch on Disney+ now.

2015! Menschen, Bilder, Emotionen - RTL Jahresrueckblick

Adele found herself at the centre of a Karl Lagerfeld jibe back in 2012 when Paris’ Metro asked the designer what he thought about singer Lana Del Rey. He said at the time: “I prefer Adele and Florence Welch. But as a modern singer she is not bad. The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.” However, in a 2013 CNN interview, Lagerfeld backtracked as he said the quote had been taken out of context, adding that he had actually said Adele was a “little roundish.”

Royal Wedding - Wedding Guests And Party Make Their Way To Westminster Abbey

Catherine, Princess of Wales' sister Pippa Middleton became known as "Her Royal Hotness" due to her appearance in a figure-hugging gown at the Royal Wedding. Kate was praised by Karl Lagerfeld as the right match for Prince William, but he disagreed with the compliments about Pippa, saying “her sister struggles. I don’t like the sister’s face. She should only show her back". When quizzed on his criticism of Pippa in a later interview with Grazia, he reiterated: “I think her sister looks better.”

The Inaugural Ball

Michelle Obama's face was branded "magical" by Karl Lagerfeld. However, the Chanel designer wasn't as keen when the former First Lady decided to add a fringe to her hairstyle, which prompted him to compare her to a news anchor. He brutally shared: “Frankly, the fringe was a bad idea. It’s not good.”

The Devil Wears Prada star Meryl Streep

The Devil Wears Prada star Meryl Streep came under fire from Karl Lagerfeld back in 2017, when he claimed the Hollywood actress had ordered a Chanel dress to wear to the Oscars, only to change her mind when a different designer offered her a dress for free. Meryl denied this was the case after Lagerfeld swiped: “A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?”
