Etheridge hits out at new cancer claims
MELISSA ETHERIDGE is urging fans to question new U.S. health guidelines which state most women don't require breast cancer screenings until they are 50.
The breast cancer survivor admits she's concerned about an announcement made by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force earlier this month (Nov09) indicating women in their 40s should stop having annual mammograms.
Etheridge, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 40s, doesn't trust the advice and is urging women to seek screenings early to help catch the disease in its first stages.
She tells People.com, "We have gotten ourselves into a big, deep hole in the way that we look at health care. We are in a system where they get money when we're sick. That's never going to work for us.
"So when someone says, 'You don't need a mammogram until you're 50,' you take charge of that. I don't trust any of that."
