Eamonn Holmes: ‘Shows how divided we all are’ Star addresses negative impact of Brexit
EAMONN HOLMES opened up about how the Brexit debate is affecting the country on his Talk Radio show yesterday, as the This Morning presenter suggested Boris Johnson’s brother Jo Johnson’s decision to quit his role in government represents “how divided we all are”.
This Morning: Eamonn jokes with Ruth about Loose Women
Eamonn Holmes, 59, aired his views on Brexit while discussing 55-year-old Tory MP Boris Johnson’s younger brother Jo Johnson’s, 47, resignation on Talk Radio yesterday. When Jo exited Parliament yesterday, he admitted on Twitter he was “torn between family loyalty and the national interest” and spoke out about an “unresolvable tension” in his role. The This Morning host introduced the news by explaining to listeners: “Jo Johnson walking out on government. He said he put the national interest ahead of family ties.” Eamonn then invited people to call the show and share their opinions on whether the former Business Minister’s surprising decision was “forgivable, or not forgivable?”
Maybe it just shows how divided we all are.
The star then turned to his guest, New York Observer columnist Andre Walker, and suggested Jo’s exit represents “division” in the nation due to conflicting perspectives on Brexit.
He claimed: “And yet, Andre, it may be a reflection and hold a mirror up to the rest of the country where people are saying, ‘I’m Brexit’, ‘I’m not Brexit’.
‘I want to remain’, ‘I want an extension’, ‘I want a second referendum’. Maybe it just shows how divided we all are.”
However, Andre seemed to disagree with Eamonn’s assertion, as he replied: “It does and it doesn’t. To me, it is saying, ‘I don’t believe this man is competent to be Prime Minister because of my disagreement with him on this issue.'
“Now, I think that’s very different to having a disagreement because we all know everyone is rowing about Brexit, we all know that everybody has a slightly different view.”
The journalist continued: “We all know we’re divided, but actually it’s effectively saying, ‘I cannot work with this man because he’s incompetent,’ and when it’s your brother, I think it’s dastardly.”
The Irish TV personality interviewed Guy on his Drive Time Talk Radio show and wondered why he is now siding with Boris Johnson’s plan to leave the European Union.
Guy told the ITV favourite: “The reality is we have to press on with this. I speak as someone who campaigned very strongly for Remain, but I have voted three times for a deal and I believe absolutely the Prime Minister is right, we have to leave.”
In response, Eamonn quizzed: “But why are you saying, ‘The Prime Minister is right, we have to leave,’ as a committed Remainer?”
However, Guy quickly interjected and exclaimed: “I’m a democrat, it’s really simple. If I lose a general election, it’s over. If I lose a football match, it’s over.
“The referendum was lost, we have now been three years and my constituents are turning around to me and saying, ‘Why haven’t we left?’”
The MoneySavingExpert.com founder, told his 618,000 followers: “The problem with 'parliament is disgraceful' is it is actually reflecting the nation's view.
"Cameron's vote disgracefully didn't specify implementation,”(sic) he claimed.
“The nation is split, radically, Fundamentally, (irreparably?), sadly over Brexit.
“Parliament is mirroring that! #bbcqt,” Martin added.
