DEMI Lovato has divided the internet after publishing a controversial tweet about rapper 21 - but why did it lead to the singer deleting her Twitter account?
Demi Lovato pays tribute to fans after 'Sober' admission
Demi Lovato set social media alight based on a single tweet involving a meme circulating during Sunday's Super Bowl. The 26-year-old star has tried to maintain a low profile in recent months following an alleged drug overdose in July. But the Sober singer has remained an active presence on Twitter, urging people in December to wait until she had something to say rather than posting stories. She wrote: "If I feel like the world needs to know something, I will tell them MYSELF. All my fans need to know is I'm working hard on myself, I'm happy and clean and I'm SO grateful for their support."
Hollywood Life reported the artist is “secretly recording” new music in the studio ahead of a big comeback his year.
But she deleted her Twitter account hours after posting about rapper 21 Savage on Sunday.
But why and what did Demi say?
Demi sparked outrage after writing a tweet about British rapper 21 Savage who was arrested on Sunday by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Atlanta, Georgia.
21 Savage, whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham, was detained by authorities after overstaying his legal visa, which expired in July 2006.
Confident songwriter Demi wrote: “So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.”
The rapper's fans immediately criticised Demi for the post, making hateful messages about her past drug use.
One critic, US hip-hop artist Offsetm, wrote: "ALL THE MEMES AND S--T AINT FUNNY WHEN SOMEBODY GOING THROUGH SOME.
"PRAYING FOR MY DAWG AINT S--T FUNNY HIS FANILY [sic] DEPENDING ON HIM."
Demi responded: “If you're gonna come at me for making a joke, try coming at me with something original not involving drugs.”
In another message she said: "F--k Twitter. This is why I don't tweet anymore."
The Camp Rock actress shared one of the offending memes about 21 Savage, showing a hand writing on paper with a quill, which was captioned: “This how 21 Savage be writing his verses.”
Alongside this, Demi wrote: “FYI this is the s*** I'm laughing at.. not the fact that anyone is getting deported.
But the explanation was not enough to quell the anger against Demi’s original tweet and she subsequently deleted her entire Twitter account.
Later on she took to Instagram stories to post a lengthy response explaining her actions.
She wrote: I know that's not a joke.. not have I EVER laughed at that.
“The meme I posted/was talking about was of him being writing with a feather pen.
“Sorry if I offended anyone. But it's no excuse to laugh at someone's addiction let alone their OD.”
Demi shared a picture of her dressed up for her friend's wedding last month on Instagram.
She wrote: "I was a bridesmaid yesterday for my sister/ former babysitter/friend of 23 years... I love you @jennaschubart.
"What a perfect wedding for a perfect couple!! #MrandMrsSmith"
