Australian Open: Serena Williams reflects on Tatjana Maria win
The 23-time Grand Slam champion kicked off her time at the first major of the year, beating German Tatjana Maria 6-0 6-2 in only 49 minutes. But she also had fans talking about her striking outfit. To cope with the 33C temperatures, she unveiled her latest fashion statement just before the umpire called time on the match.
She wore a bottle-green, figure-hugging jumpsuit, which was paired with fish-net stockings that she said she will wear throughout the tournament.
When asked to describe it, she said: "It's a Serena-tard".
Serena explained it was "an incredibly strong, powerful statement for mums that are trying to get back and get fit. That was basically it for me."
The 37-year-old last played at the Australian Open in 2017 and even won the title while pregnant.
After giving birth, she took time off from the tour, but is now on her fourth Grand Slam tournament since returning.
Serena developed blood clots after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. on September 1, 2017.
This resulted in her having four surgeries, but she back copeting at the WTA Tour last March and played in two events before the French Open.
Her impressive comeback included another unique fashion choice, which was a skin-tight, full-length black catsuit.
At the time, Serena said the outfit was worn for health reasons, due to the clots.
But she also said the outfit made her feel like a superhero.
Serena said compression stockings have always been a big part of her ensemble, as she still has concerns about deep vein thrombosis.
She said: I have had some issues, and they're not done. So it's just something I just have to do for pretty much probably the rest of my career."
